BCC comment on new drug treatment for secondary breast cancer

Comment on research stating that a compound found in cannabis may be effective in stopping the spread of cancer cells throughout the body.

Maria Leadbeater, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Secondary Breast Cancer, at Breast Cancer Care, said:

“Many people experience side effects while having chemotherapy, such as nausea and an increased risk of infection, which can take both a physical and emotional toll.

“Any drug that has fewer side effects will, of course, be of great interest. We know from talking daily to people with breast cancer that they welcome any developments that provide them with more treatment options.

“While CBD compounds may help breast cancer patients in the future, it is clear that much more research needs to be carried out before this drug can be used in a clinical setting.

“It is important that people currently living with advanced breast cancer receive full information on the range of treatments currently available. Anyone with questions about advanced, or primary, breast cancer can call Breast Cancer Care’s helpline on 0808 800 6000.
