Wayne David was first elected as the Labour MP for Caerphilly in 2001, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 6,833.
He currently serves as Shadow Minister for the Middle East and North Africa, having been appointed to the role in June 2023 after his predecessor Bambos Charalambous was suspended as a Labour Party MP after a complaint about his conduct
The constituency of Caerphilly is based largely on the East Glamorgan town of Caerphilly known for its imposing castle, although it spreads south onto the outskirts of Cardiff, and north to include Hengoes and Ystrad Mynach. It is quite a small constituency by population. Part of Labour’s south wales industrial heartland, it has been won by the party at every General Election since the First World War.
David previously served as Shadow Minister for the Middle East (2020-21), Shadow Minister for the Armed Forces (2016-2020), and Shadow Minister for Europe (2010-11).
David has anounced that he plans to step down from the House of Commons at the next general election.
Wayne David served in the last Labour Government, being appointed as the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State in the Wales Office in 2008.
For 10 years between 1999 and 2009, David was a Member of the European Parliament for South Wales and was Leader of the Labour Group.
He supported Keir Starmer in the 2020 Labour leadership election.
Born in 1957, and brought up in a former mining community, Wayne David comes from a mining family. He has lived in the South Wales Valleys all his life.
Before being entering politics, David worked for the Youth Service in Caerphilly and had special responsibility for supporting voluntary youth organisations like the YMCA. He previously also worked in the Rhymney Valley as a lecturer and organiser for the Workers’ Educational Association. He lectured on Trade Union Health and Safety and shop steward courses, and taught classes on a range of political and economic subjects.
Wayne David is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Vietnam. He is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Devolution; Industrial Heritage; Belarus; Belize; and Kygrhyzstan.
