Zarah Sultana is the Labour MP for Coventry South, having first been elected to Parliament in 2019 with a slim majority of 401 over the Conservative Party.
Covering the centre of Coventry including the cathedral, Coventry South is the marginally more affluent of the City’s three constituencies. . It spreads down from the city centre in the north to include the highly deprived area of St Michaels, alongside some more middle class housing in Earlsdon, Cannon park, and Westwood Heath. Coventry University is found within this seat, alongside Coventry cathedral.
Born in 1993, Zarah Sultana, studied International Relations and Economics at the University of Birmingham. She worked as a marketing and engagement officer before being elected to Parliament at the age of just 26.
She previously sat on the National Executive of the National Union of Students.
Sultana is positioned on the left of the Labour Party, and is arguably the most outspoken of the party’s 2019 intake of MPs.
An opponent of New Labour, in her Maiden speech in the House of Commons she attacked what she labelled as the last ’40 years of Thatcherism’.
She is a member of the Socialist Campaign Group of MPs, and supported Rebecca Long Bailey in the 2020 Labour Leadership election.
Well known for her internet videos, and her trenchantly expressed views on Twitter, Sultana has been dubbed as the ‘MP for Twitter’. She has over 150,000 followers on the social media platform and rising. She also has over a 100,000 followers on Instagram, and a presence on Tik-Tok.
In 2021, the Sunday Times ran an article entitled, ‘No expense spared by Trotskyist’s heir’ in which it detailed an expenses claim of £1,193.80 by Sultana to purchase a new top of the range iPhone.
Sultan is a Muslim of Pakistani descent. She has campaigned against male violence towards women and girls.
She previously apologised for a 2015 social media post that said she would celebrate when ‘the likes of Blair, Netanyahu, and Bush’ die.
