Double, Steve

Steve Double was first elected as the Conservative MP for St Austell & Newquay in 2015, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 16,526.

Containing the two towns of St Austell & Newquay on the Cornish Coast, this constituency was once one of the UK’s safest Liberal areas, but it has been held by the Conservatives since 2015.   Home to some of the UK’s best surfing beaches, the Eden project is found within this seat.

Steve Double was appointed as a Government Whip (Lord Commissioner of HM Treasury) in October 2022.

He briefly served as Under Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs by Boris Johnson in July 2022.  He was dismissed by Liz Truss when she became prime minister in Septembe 2022.   He was an assistant government whip between September 2021 and July 2022.

Double was born and raised in St Austell, and previously served as the Town’s Mayor.  He also was elected to Cornwall County Council between 2009 and 2013.

He has always lived and worked in mid-Cornwall, primarily working in the marketing services sector.  The Register of Members Interests shows him to be a shareholder in Phoenix Corporate Gifts Ltd; a company selling branded merchandise.

Double is married with two children.  The Register of Members Interests shows that he employs his wife Ann, as his principal secretary.

An evangelical Christian he is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Christianity in the Holy Land.

He supported Brexit in the 2016 EU referendum, and submitted a letter of no confidence in Theresa May in 2018.

At Westminster he is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Hong Kong, Migration, Beer, Dairy, and Chair of the Groups on Critical Materials, Fatherhood, General Aviation, Ocean Conservation, and Hospitality and Tourism.
