Russell-Moyle, Lloyd

Lloyd Russell-Moyle is‌ ‌the Labour‌ ‌MP‌ ‌for Brighton Kemptown‌, having‌ ‌first‌ ‌been‌ ‌elected‌ ‌to‌ ‌Parliament‌ ‌in‌ 2017. He was reelected‌ ‌at‌ ‌the‌ ‌2019‌ ‌General‌ ‌Election‌ ‌with‌ ‌a‌ ‌majority‌ ‌of‌ 8,061 over‌ ‌the‌ ‌Conservative Party.‌ ‌

The constituency of Brighton Kemptown contains the eastern part of Brighton spreading out from the city to include the coastal areas of Peacehaven and Rottingdean and a small area of the South Downs near Telescombe.  The city’s Whitehawk and Moulsecoomb estates are found in this constituency alongside Brighton racecourse.  Kemptown is widely regarded as being the centre of Brighton’s large LGBT community.  Like nearby Hove, this area has bucked the national trend and become increasingly safe Labour territory in recent years.

Lloyd‌ Russell-Moyle ‌sat on the Labour front bench in 2020 as a shadow foreign affairs spokesperson, and then as shadow minister for the natural environment and air quality.

The Daily Mail has previously reported that Russell-Moyle made comments in relation to his constituency, suggesting that the area was ‘not Tory-free enough for my liking’, apparently adding “We’ve still got a few more to rout out but because of your fantastic door-knocking, we know where they live”.

Born‌ ‌in 1986 in Brighton, Lloyd‌ Russell-Moyle ‌was‌ ‌educated‌ ‌at‌ the University of Bradford and the University of Sussex. He worked‌ at the National Youth agency and as a based in Brussels‌, ‌before‌ ‌being‌ ‌elected‌ ‌to‌ Parliament.‌ ‌

Russell-Moyle is firmly on the left wing of the Labour Party.  He nominated Rebecca Long-Bailey in the 2020 Labour leadership election.

He was formerly the Treasurer for the Education Not for Sale Network which was a anti-capitalist network of student activists.  Speaking in 2018, Russell-Moyle said, “Put simply, the New Labour placating of capitalism has failed a generation and they’re ready for an alternative”.

He was thrown out of the Commons Chamber for picking up the mace 2018.

In 2021, the group Labour Against Anti-Semitism (LAAS) said it had written to party leader Sir Keir Starmer, calling for the Kemptown MP Lloyd Russell-Moyle to lose the labour whip. This follows a speech in which Russell-Moyle also claimed that Sir Keir was “not a politician for the Labour Party”.

Russell-Moyle is openly gay.  In 2018, on World Aids Day  he revealed that he is one of a 100,000 people in the UK living with HIV.   After Chris Smith MP, the former cabinet minister in the Blair government, Russell-Moyle is only the second MP to live openly as an MP with HIV.

During a commons debate in 2020, Mr Russell-Moyle spoke of how his partner went through conversion therapy twice during his “long process of coming out”, and called for a loophole in the government proposals in relation to over 18s to be closed.

Lloyd Russell-Moyle is the Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Renters and Rental Reform; Youth Affairs; and Kurdistan in Turkey and Syria. He is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on the Night Time Economy; Sixth Form Education; the United Nations; Council Housing; the British Council; HIV and Aids; Housing Market and Housing Delivery; the British Overseas Territories; West Papua; the Western Sahara; and the Bahá’í Faith.
