Philip Davies was first elected as the Conservative MP for Shipley in 2005, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 6,242.
The constituency of Shipley is found in the north western corner of West Yorkshire. This seat covers the towns of Bingley and Shipley, alongside the Bradford suburb of Baldon. Although this is a traditional Conservative voting area, with relatively high home ownership levels, this seat is not out of the reaches of the Labour Party and was held by Labour in its better periods of 1997 to 2005 and 1945 to 1950.
Philip Davies was born in 1972 in Doncaster and he graduated from the University of Huddersfield. Before being elected MP for Shipley, Philip worked at Asda in Leeds as a Senior Marketing Manager. He also once worked for a bookmakers.
Davies was a strong supporter of Brexit in the 2016 EU referendum, and one of the earliest MPs to call for Britain’s withdraw from the EU. On the right of the Conservative Party, he is a member of the Freedom Association, opposes political correctness, and is against LGBT inclusive relationship education.
He has built a reputation as being one of the most frequent rebels against the Conservative government. He was particularly critical of David Cameron’s coalition with the Liberal Democrats.
Alongside Christopher Chope, Davies is also well known for his activities filibustering, or talking out, Private Members Bills.
Davies is married to the Conservative MP and former Cabinet Minister, Esther McVey. He is interested in horse racing.
