Stephanie Peacock is the Labour MP for Barnsley East, having first been elected to Parliament in 2017.She was re-elected in the 2019 General Election with a majority of 3,217 over the Brexit Party.
She currently serves as the shadow minister for sport, gambling and culture.
A former mining area in South Yorkshire, Barnsley East has long been a safe Labour constituency, albeit the party’s majority was cut in 2019, as a reflection of the high 71% of voters who backed Leave in the 2016 EU referendum. Indeed the Brexit party beat the Conservatives into second place here in 2019.
Peacock previously served as Labour’s veterans spokesperson in the party’s defence, holding the role from 2021 to 2022.
Before this, Peacock served as a shadow environment minister and shadow Cabinet Office minister.
Born in 1986, Stephanie Peacock studied History at the Queen Mary University of London and obtained a master’s degree from the Institute of Education, University College London. She worked as a teacher, before going on to work in adult education in Yorkshire.
Stephanie Peacock then worked as a Political Officer for the GMB trade union for 4 years, before being elected to Parliament.
At Westminster, Peacock has campaigned for the maximum sentence for death by dangerous driving to be increased from 14 years to Life imprisonment.
She served on Labour’s National Executive Committee for four years, and for a decade on the party’s policy making body, the National Policy Forum.
Stephanie Peacock is Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Groups on Industrial Heritage. She is Vice Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Groups on Belgium, Luxembourg, and Ceramics.
A keen long distance runner, who likes football, she is the former Partner of Tom Watson, the former Deputy Leader of the Labour Party.
She supported Lisa Nandy in the 2020 Labour leadership election.
