Michael Tomlinson was first elected as the Conservative MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole in 2015, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 14,898.
The constituency of Mid Dorset and North Poole contains the the Merley housing estate, Broadstone and Canford Heath from the town of Poole, before spreading north into the Dorset countryside. Outside of Poole, it includes the small town of Wareham at the furthest end of Poole Harbour, the market town of Wimborne Minster in the Purbeck Hills, and the villages of Bere Regis and Corfe Mullen.
This seat was held by the Liberal Democrats between 2001 and 2015. However with the Lib Dem vote here crashing from 45% in 2010 to a static level of around 29% in the last three General Elections, this now appears more of a relatively safe Conservative seat.
Tomlinson was appointed Solicitor General in September 2022.
In December 2023, Tomlinson was appointed illegal migration minister in the wake of Robert Jenrick’s resignation. Jenrick had his old post, that of immigration minister, split in two in the mini-reshuffle triggered by his resignation.
Tom Pursglove became legal migration minister.
