Maria Miller was first elected as the Conservative MP for Basingstoke in 2005, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 14,198.
The Hampshire constituency of Basingstoke is a relatively compact seat centred predominately around the town of Basingstoke itself. Although this area of England has supported the Conservatives continuously since 1924, the Basingstoke constituency has never been totally out of Labour’s grasp and the party came close to winning here in both 1997 and 2001. A large proportion of the workforce commute from here into London and the Thames Valley to work.
Maria Miller was the Chairman of the Commons Select Committee on Women and Equalities between 2015 and 2020. She was made a Dame in June 2022.
Miller previously had served in the Cabinet as Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport between 2012 and 2014. Between 2010 and 2012 she was Under Secretary of State for Disabled People.
Dame Maria Miller was born in 1964 near Wolverhampton and brought up in South Wales where she attended Brynteg Comprehensive School, Bridgend. She then studied at the London School of Economics.
She worked in public relations and as a marketing consultant before being elected to Westminster.
She supported Remain in the 2016 EU referendum, and backed Dominic Raab in the 2019 Conservative Party leadership election. She has previously campaigned for a change in the law in relation to revenge pornography.
Dame Maria Miller is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on United Nations Women; Women in Parliament. She is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Women, Peace and Security; Chalk Streams; British Hindus; Digital Regulation and Responsibility; Global Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Rights; the Perpetrators of Domestic Abuse; and South West Railway.
