Haigh, Louise

Louise Haigh was first elected as the Labour MP for Sheffield Heeley in 2015, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 8,520.

The South Yorkshire constituency of Sheffield Heeley covers the south of the city of Sheffield.   This is a mixed constituency in terms of housing profile, containing both middle class suburbs and inner city housing estates. It has been held comfortably by the Labour Party ever since 1974. In 2010, the British National Party obtained over 5% of the vote in this seat, and unusually managed to retain their deposit.

Haigh was appointed Shadow Secretary of State for Transport in November 2021.  She formerly sat in the Shadow Cabinet as the Shadow Secretary of State for Northern Ireland between 2020 and 2021.

She was the Shadow Minister for Policing under Jeremy Corbyn (2017-2020).

Born in 1987, Haigh attended Sheffield High School and Nottingham University.  She previously worked as a youth worker and union official for the Unite Union, as well as a political researcher to the MP Lisa Nandy, before being elected to :Parliament.    She was also once a shop steward for the Unite union.

Haigh served as a Special Constable in the Met Police between 2009 and 2011.

Haigh’s brother is a snooker correspondent for the Metro newspaper, and Haigh herself attended the 2022 World Snooker final.

Despite nominating Jeremy Corbyn for the Labour leadership in 2015, Haigh backed Owen Smith in his 2016 leadership challenge against Mr Corbyn.  She supported Lisa Nandy in her 2020 leadership bid.

Haigh has previously campaigned to remove the parental rights of fathers who conceived a child through rape. She is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Antisemitism; Football; and Fracking.
