Emma Lewell-Buck is the Labour MP for South Shields, having first been elected to Parliament in a 2013 by-election. She was re-elected in the 2019 General Election with a majority of 9,585 over the Conservative Party.
The constituency of South Shields is found to the east of Newcastle, and to the north of Sunderland on the coast, in South Tyneside. A former mining and shipbuilding area, the area is a Labour heartland which has elected Labour MPs ever since the Second World War. It was previously represented in Parliament by the former Labour foreign secretary, David Miliband.
Born in 1978, Lewell-Buck grew up in South Shields, and claims to be a direct descendant of ‘local hero’ William Wouldhave, the inventor of the lifeboat. She studied politics and media studies at Northumbria University, before gaining a master’s degree in social work from Durham University.
Lewell-Buck worked as a social worker, specialising in child protection before being elected to Parliament.
She supported Owen Smith in his 2016 challenge against Jeremy Corbyn, and backed Lisa Nandy in the 2020 Labour leadership election.
Lewell-Buck served on South Tyneside Council between 2004 and 2013.
She has been diagnosed with dyspraxia, and is Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Dyspraxia,
According to the Register of Member’s Interests, she employs her husband, Simon Buck, as Office Manager
