Kim Johnson is the Labour MP for Liverpool Riverside, having first been elected to Parliament in 2019 with a massive majority of 37,043 over the Conservative Party.
Liverpool Riverside covers the Liverpool suburbs of Mossley Hill, Kirkdale, and Aigburth. The Cavern Club which gave rise to the Beatles is found in this constituency. It also contains Liverpool University and close to a third of the electorate are said to be students. It is one of the safest Labour seats in the UK. The Green Party has recently polled better in this constituency than in many areas.
Born in 1966, Kim Johnson worked as a Unison Shop steward, and community development officer, before being elected to Parliament.
An anti racism campaigner, Johnson is considered to be on the left of the Labour Party and nominated Rebecca Long Bailey during the 2020 Labour leadership election.
In 2021, Johnson accused the Metropolitan police of institutional racism after she and her family were stopped by officers in central London during the midst ot the European football championships.
Johnson was formerly a PPS to Angela Rayner before resigning in 2020 to vote against the Covert Human Intelligence Services bill in 2020. She was further critical of the Labour leader when he was seen to demote Angela Rayner, following the 2021 local election results, calling the move a ‘despicable act of cowardice’.
She is Chair of Squash Liverpool, a Community Interest Company, that is an award winning coffee shop, arts and health initiative based in Toxteth.
Johnson is a member of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Africa, Cuba, Palestine, the Western Sahara, and Zimbabwe, as well as the groups on Council Housing and Apprenticeships.
