John Stevenson was first elected as the Conservative MP for Carlisle in 2010, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 8,319.
Although a Labour voting seat for the previous 50 years, the Conservatives won Carlisle in 2010 and have held the constituency ever since. The most densely populated seat in Cumbria, Carlisle is located close to the Scottish border and contains the campus of the University of Cumbria.
Born in Aberdeen in 1963, Stevenson grew up in Scotland and is a member of the Church of Scotland. He opposed same sex marriage.
John Stevenson works a solicitor before becoming an MP. According to the Register of Members Interests he remains a partner in the Bendles law firm, in Carlisle.
He was opposed to Brexit in the 2016 EU referendum, and supported Michael Gove in the 2019 Conservative leadership election.
Expressing concern over the partygate affair, in the spring of 2022, he suggested that Boris Johnson should submit himself to a ‘no confidence’ vote from Conservative MPs.
He is Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Family Business, Food and Drink, Inheritance and Intergenerational Fairness, Key Cities, and the Northern Powerhouse.
Stevenson enjoys cycling, so much so that he once undertook a charity cycle ride all the way from Lands End to John O’ Groats.
According to the Register of Members Interests, he employs his partner, as a part-time Senior Secretary.
