Tom Hunt is the Conservative Party MP for Ipswich, having first been elected to Parliament in 2019, gaining the seat from Labour with a majority of 5,479.
The Ipswich constituency centres on the town of Ipswich itself and has been a long standing marginal constituency which typically has supported the winning party in British General Elections since 1945. The recent exception being in 2017 when the Suffolk seat was briefly won back by the Labour Party.
Tom Hunt was appointed parliamentary private secretary at the Northern Ireland Office in October 2022.
Born in 1988, Tom Hunt studied Politics and Modern History at the University of Manchester, and then took an Msc in Russian and east European studies at Oxford,
Before being elected to Parliament, Tom Hunt previously worked as a researcher for Oliver Dowden MP, and as Chief of Staff to the Cambridge and Peterborough Mayor.
He was also the Head of Press for the Countryside Alliance pressure group between 2016 and 2017.
He served on East Cambridgeshire District Council between 2011 and 2017.
Hunt has been a supporter of the idea of flying the Union Jack in British schools.
He was highly critical of the alleged Downing Street ‘partygate’ event that occurred the night before Prince Philip’s funeral saying it filled him “with disgust”.
Tom Hunt is a member of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Bangladesh, Cricket, Dyspraxia, Micromobility, and Philanthropy and Social Investment.
