Preet Kaur Gill is the Labour and Co-operative MP for Birmingham Edgbaston, having first been elected to Parliament in 2017, being re-elected in 2019 with a majority of 5,614.
She serves as the Shadow Minister for Primary Care and Public Health on Keir Starmer’s frontbench.
The Birmingham Edgbaston constituency is found to the west of Birmingham and covers the wards of Barley Green, Edgbaston, Harborne and Quinton. Birmingham University is found within this constituency.
A former Conservative-Labour marginal, this seat was previously represented in Parliament by the pre War Conservative Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain. It has now been represented by a woman in Parliament continuously since 1953.
Preet Gill has been appointed to the Shadow Cabinet as Shadow Cabinet minister for International Development in April 2020.
But she was demoted from the role in September 2023 as part of Keir Starmer’s shadow cabinet reshuffle. She now serves as a health spokesperson in Wes Streeting’s team as the Shadow Minister for Primary Care and Public Health.
Lisa Nandy was appointed to the post as Labour’s shadow international development spokesperson, taking Gill’s place in the shadow cabinet.
Gill has previously served as junior opposition spokesperson for International Development between 2018 and 2020, a post in which she did not attend cabinet.
Preet Gill is the first female Sikh Member of the Parliament, and previously successfully amended the Offensive Weapons Bill to give Sikh’s an exemption for carrying kirpan knives. She is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on British Sikhs.
Born in 1972, Preet Gill was educated at the University of East London. She once worked in a Kibbutz in Israel and with street children in India. She worked in children’s services and social care before becoming an MP.
She was elected to Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council between 2012 and 2018.
At Westminster she has been Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on International Freedom of Religion or Belief, the West Midlands.
She supported Keir Starmer in the 2020 Labour Leadership Election. She is married with two daughters.
