Stephen Flynn is the Scottish National Party MP for Aberdeen South, having first been elected to Parliament in 2019, gaining the seat off the Conservatives with a majority of 3,982.
The Aberdeen South constituency covers the southern suburbs of the City of Aberdeen and some rural areas to the south. Supported by the oil industry, Aberdeen South is one of the most affluent seats in Scotland, and more so than the neighbouring Aberdeen North constituency. The Conservative Party held the seat between 2017 and 2019, and during the period of the Thatcher and Major governments in the 1980s and 1990s.
Stephen Flynn MP is SNP Parliamentary Leader at Westminster. He was elected in December 2022 having beaten his colleague Alison Thewliss by 26 votes to 17 in a vote of SNP MPs.
Mr Flynn was previously the SNP spokesperson on business, energy and industrial strategy at Westminster.
During his maiden speech as an MP in the House of Commons, Flyn warned Conservative MPs that “we will not forget, and we will not forgive this government”, adding: “Scotland rejects your austerity and Scotland rejects your Brexit, just as Scotland rejected your prime minister.”
He has previously opposed imposing an windfall tax on North Sea oil and gas firms – a policy enthusiastically backed by party leader Nicola Sturgeon – over the potential impact on jobs in Aberdeen.
Born in 1988, Stephen Flynn studied politics at Dundee University.
A professional politician, Flynn previously worked as a political researcher for SNP MSPs at Holyrood and SNP MPs at Westminster, before being elected to Parliament.
Flynn was elected to Aberdeen City Council in 2015 and became the SNP Group Leader on the Council in 2016.
He has been a prominent member of the so-called Tuesday Club of male SNP MPs who regularly met for five-a-side football, beer and curry nights. Mr Flynn is a supporter of Dundee United.
