Drew Hendry was elected as the Scottish National Party MP for Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch & Strathspey in 2015, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 10,440.
The constituency of Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch, and Strathspey is a geographically vast seat in Northern Scotland that includes the Highlands and the Cairngorms. It contains the city of Inverness, the communities of Kingussie, Nairn, and the ski resort at Aviemore.
This was once a solid Liberal area being held by the party for almost half a century prior to 1997. The area was held briefly by Labour between 1997 and 2005, before returning to the Liberal Democrats in 2005. For a decade it was represented by the former Lib Dem Cabinet Minister, Danny Alexander. However since their Scottish landslide in 2015, this area has remained loyal to the SNP, with the SNP winning with a five figure majority in 2019.
Hendry is the SNP spokesperson on international trade at Westminster.
Born in 1964 in Edinburgh, Hendry first became interested in politics with the Scottish devolution referendum of 1979. He founded and ran his own digital marketing services company, Teclan Ltd, before being elected to Parliament. He remains a shareholder in the Company.
Hendry served on Highlands Council between 20087 and 2015, and was the leader of the Council between 2012 and 2015.
Hendry was suspended from the Commons chamber in 2020, after shouting and refusing to sit down during a debate on Brexit.
Drew Hendry is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Terminal Illness. He is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Manufacturing; Scotch Whisky; Cuba; Germany; Gibraltar; Greenland; Romania; Financial Education for Young People; and Forestry and Tree Planting.
