Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi is the Labour MP for Slough, having first been elected to Parliament in 2017. He was reelected in the 2019 General Election with a majority of 13,640.
He currently serves as shadow exchequer secretary to the Treasury, having been appointed to the role as part of Keir Starmer’s September 2023 reshuffle.
The Slough constituency is found within the county of Berkshire and covers Slough, and Langley in the east of Berkshire. An ethnically diverse seat, the Slough constituency contains a Muslim community in excess of 30,000 and a Sikh community approaching 15,000. The constituency is full of industrial estates and business parks, and has possessed bases to a number of leading businesses such as Mars and Nintendo. Once a marginal constituency, Slough is now a safe Labour seat.
Tan Dhesi previously served as Shadow Minister for Rail from April 2020 to September 2023. He also served as Parliamentary Private Secretary to Jeremy Corbyn after the 2019 general election until Keir Starmer’s election as Labour leader..
Born in 1978 in Slough, Tan studied Mathematics with management studies from University College London. He then obtained an MSc in Applied Statistics at Oxford University, before then obtaining a MPhil from Cambridge University in South Asian History.
Before being elected to Parliament, Tan worked in construction and ran his own small company in Scotland. Tan also served as the Mayor of Gravesham and a Councillor on Gravesham Borough Council between 2007 and 2019.
He supported Lisa Nandy in the 2020 Labour leadership election. He is Britain’s first turbaned Sikh MP.
In early 2022, Dhesi was subject to Russian sanctions and is banned from entering the country.
At Westminster, Dhesi is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Indian Traditional Sciences, Malaria and Tropical Diseases, Religion in the Media, Swimming, Kashmir, Montserrat, Canada, and War Heritage.
