Conor McGinn was elected Labour MP for St Helens North in 2015, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 12,209.
The constituency of St Helen’s North is a safe Labour seat in Merseyside having been held by the Labour Party consistently since 1935. It contains the northern aspect of the town of St Helens as well as the satellite towns and villages of Billinge, Earlestown, Haydock, Newton le Willows, and Rainford. The Haydock Park race course is found within this seat.
In December 2022, Conor McGinn lost the labour party whip at Westminter and was suspended from the party whilst a complaint was investigated. He currently sits as an independent at Westminster.
Conor McGinn previously served as Labour’s Deputy National Campaign Coordinator. He was the Shadow Minister of State for Security between 2020 and 2021.
Before becoming an MP, Conor McGinn sat on the Labour Party National Executive Committee. He also worked as advisor to Vernon Coaker, Ed Miliband’s Shadow Secretary of State for Defence from 2013 to 2015.
A communist in his youth, McGinn is now on the right of the Labour Party. He both nominated and voted for Owen Smith in his 2016 challenge against Jeremy Corbyn.
Born in 1984, Conor McGinn grew up in Camlough, South Armagh, Northern Ireland. His father was a Sinn Fein Councillor. McGinn is Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Groups on Ireland and the Irish in Britain
McGinn was educated at London Metropolitan University. Before entering politics he worked in mental health, public health and as the Director of a charity working with prisoners and their families. He also ran a small public affairs business.
McGinn supported Sir Keir Starmer in the 2020 Labour leadership election.
He was previously critical of Jeremy Corbyn during his time as Labour leader, variously suggesting that Jeremy Corbyn’s Islington constituency was not like the rest of the country and that Jeremy Corbyn was out of touch with ordinary people’s concerns.
In 2018, McGinn introduced a private members bill to legislate for same-sex marriage in Northern Ireland.
Conor McGinn is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Racing and Bloodstock, Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Formula One, Betting and Gaming, Greyhounds, Industrial Heritage, Snooker, Darts, CAFOD, Celtic Nations, Childcare and Early Education, and Trans Atlantic Trade. He is, and Coalfield Communities.
McGinn is married to Kate and the couple have two young children. He lists his interests as real Ale, horse racing, and music.
