Clive Efford was elected as the Labour MP for Eltham in South East London in 1997. In 2019 he was reelected with a majority of 3,197.
The constituency of Eltham is found in inner south east London and covers the areas around Eltham, Shooters Hill, and Kidbrooke in the southern part of the Borough of Greenwich. Eltham is a mixed constituency in terms of its ethnic and economic make up. Unlike many London seats a majority of voters choose to Leave the European Union in the 2016 EU referendum. It has been held by Labour since 1997, having been a Conservative seat between 1983 and 1997.
Efford served as the Shadow Minister for Sport between 2011 and 2016. He resigned in 2016 in protest against Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership, having previously nominated Corbyn in the 2015 Labour leadership contest.
He supported Sir Keir Starmer in the 2020 Labour leadership election. Efford is Chair of the Tribune group of Labour MPs, generally considered to be on the soft left of the party.
Born in 1958, Efford was a licensed London taxi driver who completed ‘The Knowledge’, before becoming an MP.
Efford also served as a local councillor for the old Eltham Well Hall ward from 1986 until 1998.
