Charles Walker has been the Conservative MP for Broxbourne in Hertfordshire since 2005. He was reelected in 2019 with a majority of 19,807.
The constituency of Broxbourne is found in the south of Hertfordshire next to the border with Greater London. Containing the small towns of Broxbourne and Cheshunt, this constituency has a high commuter population travelling by train into central London. Tracking a portion of the M25, there are also a large number of golf courses in this area. Until 2016 it contained the head office of the supermarket chain Tesco. This has long been one of the safest areas for the Conservative Party in England.
Born in 1967, Walker is the stepson of the former athlete, television presenter, and Conservative MP, Christopher Chataway. He was educated at the University of Oregon in America.
Charles Walker has confirmed that he intends to step down from the House of Commons at the next election.
Prior to being elected to Parliament, he worked in the IT sector having held a variety of communication and marketing positions with both private and listed companies. He was formerly a main board director of the staffing firm, Blue Arrow.
He was elected to Wandsworth Council in London between 2002 and 2006,
A former Chairman of the Commons Procedure Committee, Walker has become something of a conservative grandee.
In 2015, he was instrumental in thwarting a then plan to remove Commons Speaker, John Bercow.
Walker was knighted in 2015. He was a supporter of Brexit, and is a campaigner on mental health issues. He has previously publicly commented that he has suffered from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder for thirty years.
In 2020, Walker was one of the most outspoken Parliamentary critics of the Covid lockdowns.
In the light of partygate, he said that it would show great courage if Boris Johnson resigned and that he would ‘applaud’ him for doing so. He has suggested that a lack of alternative ‘big beasts’ in politics at the moment, was for now, helping Boris Johnson to continue in post.
Sir Charles Walker is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Angling; and Chalk Streams. He is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Taxis; and Zoos and Aquariums.
In his spare time, Sir Charles Walker is a keen on angling.
Sir Charles Walker is married with three children. He employs his wife as an Office Manager.
