Andrew Percy was elected as the Conservative MP for Brigg and Goole in 2010, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 21,941.
The constituency of Brigg and Goole is one of the few constituencies that is spread across two counties, in this case covering the north of Lincolnshire and the East Riding of Yorkshire. The largest settlement in this seat is the industrial port town of Goole, but the seat includes the Isle of Axholme, parts of Scunthorpe close to the steel works, and a vast number of small rural villages. This constituency was held by Labour between 1997 and 2005, but it has seen a really pronounced swing to the Conservatives in the ensuing fifteen years. The Conservative Party have increased their vote share here from 38% in 2005, to 45% in 2010, 53% in 2015, 60% in 2017, and a massive 71.3% in 2019. A high two thirds of the electorate backed Brexit in the 2016 EU referendum.
Percy was briefly the Minister for the Northern Powerhouse between 2016 and 2017. He was the government’s trade envoy to Canada between 2017 and 2019.
In late 2022, he detailed his intention to step down from Westminster at the next election.
Andrew Percy was born and raised in East Yorkshire in 1977. He graduated from York University and undertook post-graduate study in Leeds.
He trained and worked as a secondary school teacher in Hull, specialising in History, before becoming an MP. He also previously worked at an Infants School in Scunthorpe.
He served on Hull City Council between 2000 and 2010.
Percy is a member of the Countryside Alliance, The National Trust and The Campaign Against Political Correctness. He is also a member of the teaching union VOICE (Professional Association of Teachers).
Percy is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Antisemitism having himself converted to Judaism in 2017.
He is also Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Surrogacy. He is Deputy Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Canada; and Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Small Island Developing States; American Football; Commercial Radio; Debt and Personal Finance.
