Gwynne, Andrew

Andrew Gwynne has been the Labour MP for Denton and Reddish since 2005, and was re-elected in 2019 with a majority of 14,077.

The constituency of Denton and Reddish is found to the east  of Greater Manchester and is divided by the M60 and M67 motorways.  It contains the small towns of Audenshaw, Denton, Reddish, and Dukinfield, alongside the Tame Valley Country Park. This seat has been held by the Labour Party consistently and comfortably since it was first created in 1983.  Some 61% of the local electorate backed Brexit in the 2016 EU referendum.

Gwynne was appointed a Shadow health spokesman in December 2021.

Gwynne was the Labour Party Campaigns and Elections Chair under Jeremy Corbyn, and also previously sat in the Shadow Cabinet as Shadow Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government.

When he was first elected to Parliament in 2005, Gwynne was the youngest Labour MP.

Born in 1974, Gwynne was educated at Egerton Park High School, Tameside College, North East Wales Institute and Salford University.  He is the son of Sky Sports Darts commentator, John Gwynne.

Andrew Gywnne served as a Labour Councillor on Tameside MBC between 1996 and 2008, representing both times the Denton West Ward. He is a member of the new trade union UNITE (formerly Amicus and AEEU), the Co-operative Party and the Christian Socialist Movement.

Gwynne supported Keir Starmer in the 2020 Labour leadership election, having backed Jeremy Corbyn during the challenge to his leadership in 2016, and Andy Burnham in the 2015 contest.

Andrew Gwynne is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on State Pension Inequality for Women; Cats; Greater Manchester; and Kinship Care.  He is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Hong Kong; and Historic Counties.

Gwynne is married with three children.  He has previously talked about his battles with long Covid and his struggles with depression.  He has talked about how he is kinship carer, acting as ‘dad’ to his grandchild.
