Greenpeace reaction to October heatwave

Ahead of this weekend’s expected heatwave and following the news that this September was the world’s hottest on record by an ‘extraordinary’ margin, Greenpeace UK’s co-executive director, Areeba Hamid, said:

“Parts of the UK will be hotter than some equatorial countries this weekend. This is just the latest in a terrifying trend of heatwaves and broken temperature records showing the climate crisis is spiraling out of control.

“But what’s even more terrifying is our Prime Minister’s laissez-faire approach to tackling it. You can’t cut planet-heating emissions by doing nothing. Sunak’s attempt to gaslight the British public into thinking that ditching or delaying climate policies is in their best interests simply won’t wash. He’s fooling no one.

“As we gear up for next year’s election, with increasing numbers of heatwaves and climate disasters continuing to be the norm, voters will want to see a government that’s up to the job of tackling this challenge, not running away from it. Unless Sunak’s stance swiftly changes, it’s unlikely to be this government.”
