Global Plastics Treaty draft is out, now the real work must begin
04 September 2023 – The Chair of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) and the United Nations Environmental Assembly (UNEA) just released the zero draft of the Global Plastics Treaty, which will be negotiated in the third INC meeting in Nairobi, Kenya from November 13-19, 2023.
Graham Forbes, Greenpeace USA Global Plastics Campaign Lead, said:
“The zero draft of the Global Plastics Treaty includes necessary provisions to reduce plastic production and use. But we need governments to go much further and negotiate an ambitious treaty that turns off the toxic plastics tap. The Global Plastics Treaty must cut plastic production by at least 75% to ensure that we are staying below 1.5° C for our climate and to protect our communities, human health, and biodiversity. For the sake of our collective future, we cannot waste this moment.”
