TUC slams “self-defeating” reduction in social care workforce funding
Commenting on the government halving the funding promised to develop the social care workforce in England, TUC General Secretary Paul Nowak said:
“The government promised to throw a protective ring around social care.
“But instead, it is presiding over a perfect storm. We have an ageing population and a social care workforce in crisis.
“Slashing much-needed funding is self-defeating and will cost us dear.
“If we don’t improve pay and conditions in social care vacancy rates will continue to skyrocket, and millions of people will go without the care they urgently need.
“That’s why the TUC is calling for unions, employers and government to work together on sector-wide fair pay agreements. This would help set minimum levels of pay, training and health and safety for social care.”
