TUC criticises “flimsy” and “vague” Artificial Intelligence (AI) white paper

Commenting on today’s (Wednesday) government white paper on artificial intelligence (AI), TUC General Secretary Paul Nowak said:

“AI is going to transform the way millions work in this country and is already being used across the economy to line-manage, hire and fire staff.

“To ensure AI is used ethically – and in a way that benefits working people – we need proper regulation.

“But the government is passing the buck. Today’s white paper is vague and fails to offer any clear guidance to regulators. Instead, we have a series of flimsy commitments.

“It is essential that employment law keeps pace with the AI revolution. This white paper spectacularly fails to do that.”

The TUC and leading employment lawyers have previously warned that “huge gaps” in British law over the use of AI at work could lead to “widespread” discrimination and unfair treatment at work.

The TUC will be holding a special AI summit on Tuesday 18 April.

The one-day event at TUC Congress House in London will feature a range of keynote guests including:

  • David Davis MP – chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on the future of work
  • Anna Thomas – director and co-founder of the Institute for the Future of Work
  • Neil Ross – Associate Director at TechUK
  • Robin Allen KC – Cloisters Chambers and co-founder of the AI Law Consultancy
  • Kate Bell – TUC Assistant General Secretary
  • Robert Bancroft – AI and digital services lead at the Equality and Human Rights Commission

The summit will discuss the government’s white paper. And will focus on the growing role AI is playing in managing people at work and what impact it is already having in different sectors of the economy.
