Commenting on reports that the UK government plans to block Scotland’s Deposit Return Scheme, Megan Randles, political campaigner at Greenpeace UK said:
Not content with fumbling their own attempts at an effective DRS, the UK government is trying to kaibosh Scotland’s more ambitious scheme. The Westminster government often claims they’re world leaders in tackling plastic waste but these actions yet again show them failing to fulfill that mantra.
DRS schemes are popular and an incredibly important tool in tackling the plastic waste crisis. Our neighbours in Europe have been running them successfully for years. If the UK government is committed to their own DRS then it only makes sense for them to allow Scotland to follow through with its own scheme. Perhaps they could see this as a chance to stop dithering and delaying the scheme in England and identify the gaping hole they’ve left by leaving out glass.
