The anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine

Friday 24 February 2023 will mark the first anniversary of Russia invading Ukraine.

The invasion has led to an unprecedented humanitarian crisis in the country and has provoked a major impact on food supply systems across the world.

The resilience of the Ukrainian people has been admired around the world, and over the past year there has been a significant humanitarian response by the UK and globally, with the Disasters Emergency Committee’s (DEC) Ukraine fundraising appeal reaching over £400m.

Reflecting on the first anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine, Stephanie Draper, CEO at Bond, said:

“On the first anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine, we remain deeply concerned by the ongoing humanitarian crisis and the devastating impact it is having on the civilian population. The conflict has also had a significant impact across the world on food supply systems and the global energy crisis.

One year on, the humanitarian need among those affected by the conflict is still high. Internally displaced people, particularly women, children and the elderly, need safe spaces and protection. Local NGOs continue to need support in terms of flexible funding and logistics so they can provide vital humanitarian assistance.

Over the last year, the UK, alongside the wider international community, has demonstrated in Ukraine the scale of resources that can be mobilised with enough political will. International humanitarian assistance needs to continue and should be accessible to local NGOs as they are best placed to directly respond to urgent humanitarian needs on the ground.”
