Commenting on news reports of a Lord inquiry into the governmen’ts ‘failing’ scheme to upgrade boilers with low-carbon heat pumps, Greenpeace UK’s climate campaigner, Georgia Whitaker, said:
“Our European neighbours are snapping up heat pumps like hot cakes, while UK households are being left out in the cold. In Finland 32 times more heat pumps were sold per household last year than in the UK. The UK’s failing to seize this green economic opportunity and is in serious risk of falling behind.
“With housing responsible for almost one fifth of the UK’s carbon emissions, this shameful record on switching to low-carbon heating puts the UK’s legally binding climate targets in jeopardy.
“If the government isn’t going to push and promote it, what’s the point in the scheme? In order to cut bills, carbon emissions and eradicate fuel poverty, we need a vaccine-style roll out of heat pumps and insulation not this dismal trickle.”
