Sutton Trust response to BBC grammar schools analysis

Commenting on the BBC’s analysis of grammar school admissions, Sir Peter Lampl, founder and Chairman of the Sutton Trust and Chairman of the Education Endowment Foundation, said:

“It’s great to see that there has been some progress since 2016 in the representation of pupils from less well-off backgrounds at grammar schools. All young people should have the chance to attend the best schools in their area, not just those whose families are able to afford extra tutoring.

“But while most grammars have made changes to their admissions policies, this hasn’t yet translated into a dramatic improvement in access. Free school meal rates at most grammars are still well below the national average.

“In order to improve access schools should prioritise pupil premium and free school meals kids and engage in extensive outreach in primary schools in order to encourage a wide range of applications.”
