Department for Energy Security & Net Zero
Reacting to the establishment of a new Department for Energy Security & Net Zero, Mike Childs, head of science, policy & research at Friends of the Earth said:
“Whilst the new department is welcome, it will be little more than a PR exercise if it doesn’t turn around the government’s failing climate strategy.
“The UK government was told by the High Court last year that’s its Net Zero Strategy was not up to scratch, didn’t comply with the Climate Change Act, and that a new strategy must be produced by the end of March to deliver on legally binding greenhouse gas emission cuts.
“The UK’s future prosperity is at risk if it isn’t competing in the global race for green technology leadership and green growth.
“Delivering on net zero will not only help the UK play its part in tackling the climate crisis, it will also increase energy security, boost the economy and tackle the cost-of-living crisis.”
