Greenpeace response to public order bill amendment

Commenting on the public order bill amendment, Megan Corton Scott, political campaigner for Greenpeace UK, said:

“Rishi Sunak’s double crackdown on the right to strike and protest is a blatant attempt to rob ordinary people of their ability to stand up for their beliefs and have their voices heard. By chipping away at these hard-fought rights, the prime minister is deliberately tilting the balance of power in favour of government and corporations and against ordinary people.

Giving police the power to shut down a demonstration before it even takes place is something straight out of Vladimir Putin’s playbook and should have no place in a 21st-century democracy. Disruption caused by legitimate protest is nothing compared to the chaos that will come from continued inaction on the climate crisis. Rather than tackling the cost of living crisis or the climate crisis, Rishi Sunak is instead focused on shutting down criticism of his government’s failures.”
