Energy UK responds to the Independent Net Zero Review

In response to the Independent Net Zero Review, Energy UK Deputy Director of Policy, Charles Wood said:

“We welcome the findings of the Net Zero Review which underline in comprehensive fashion, the economic benefits, in addition to the environmental ones, that meeting Net Zero will bring – as well as making it clear quite how far we have to go. Chris Skidmore and his team should be commended for delivering both a wide-ranging assessment of the potential impact of Net Zero and 129 specific recommendations and actions that we believe UK Government should adopt in full.

“Energy UK has long said that we need a more robust strategy for delivery, including long-term investment certainty, a wholesale reform of planning and connections frameworks and clear timelines and targets from energy efficiency to offshore wind. We fully support the case for the significant changes recommended by this review but equally there are also quick and simple actions that could, and should, be brought forward without delay, for example in the delivery of new onshore wind and solar capacity in the UK.

“The message is from the review is clear and is one we fully endorse. The wide-ranging benefits of investment in low carbon technologies have been set out again and the Government must seize this golden opportunity to drive a broad economic recovery and become a global leader in new technologies for years to come. Based on the evidence set out in today’s report, further delay would both be inexplicable and hand that economic opportunity to other countries.”
