UNICEF UK responds to boat capsizing in the Channel today
Responding to the tragic news of loss of life due to a boat capsizing in the Channel today, Joanna Rea, Director of Advocacy at the UK Committee for UNICEF (UNICEF UK), said:
“We are deeply saddened to learn that three people have died as a result of a boat capsizing in the Channel and are particularly concerned by reports that children were on board.
“We will continue to see such tragedies while safe and legal routes are not available to those who need them. Despite the risks involved, we know that children, parents and families will do whatever it takes to escape violence, conflict and persecution in the hope of a safe future.
“We urge the UK Government to put the protection of children at the heart of their policies and to ensure there are safe and legal routes to enter the UK, while remaining committed to long-term refugee resettlement plans.”
