Don’t leave London out of devolution debate

Responding to the publication of the Commission on the UK’s Future by Gordon Brown, Centre for London Chief Executive Nick Bowes said:

“We agree that breaking the stranglehold of Whitehall is key to unlocking economic development in the UK.

It’s crucial that London isn’t left out of the debate on devolution.

It’s often assumed that it’s ‘job done’ for devolution in London – that’s not the case. The capital has less powers than similar sized cities around the world.

The ‘Whitehall knows best’ approach isn’t working for any part of the country. Our polling shows Londoners are looking to national leaders to give the city more power.”
