Failure to free UK political prisoner in Egypt would be “a stain on Sunak’s legacy”
Will McCallum, co-Executive Director of Greenpeace UK, said: “Time is running out for Alaa. Rishi Sunak has days, not weeks, to bring him back home alive. He must leave no stone unturned in his efforts to free a UK citizen that’s been locked up for years for the crime of writing a blog.
“The prime minister should immediately ask for proof that Alaa is alive and update the family about his meeting with the Egyptian president.
“The PM cannot afford to come back empty-handed. Failure would be a stain on his legacy, a display of weakness that will haunt him for the rest of his career. This is a government that poses as a champion of free speech. This moment will test whether there’s any truth to that claim.”
