Peter Tatchell arrested in Qatar

Responding to breaking news reports that its Patron, Peter Tatchell, has been arrested in Qatar following an LGBT rights protest, Humanists UK released the following statement:

Humanists UK Chief Executive Andrew Copson said:

‘We are deeply concerned for Peter’s safety given Qatar’s record on human rights and LGBT rights in particular. In all the years we’ve worked together on humanist campaigns, I’ve always been impressed by the bravery of his campaigning and his unwavering commitment to his causes and to the victims of states like Qatar which abuse human rights.

‘Right now we are all concerned for Peter’s safety and with securing his release. We are calling on Qatar to immediately release him, and we are raising his case as a priority with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.’
