Centre for London response to Winsor review

Responding to the publication of Sir Tom Winsor’s review into Cressida Dick’s departure from the Metropolitan Police, Nick Bowes, Chief Executive Centre for London said:

“Today’s publication of the Winsor Review and the responses to it are a stark reminder of the muddled accountability of London’s police.

This messy situation isn’t a result of too much devolution, but rather not enough. The Government should reflect carefully before any response that centralises even more power in Whitehall.

What is needed is a radical overhaul of London’s policing where nothing is off the table. This should include:

  • separating out the Met Police’s national responsibilities, freeing it to focus solely on policing the city

  • making the Met solely accountable to the Mayor, giving them the power to hire and fire the commissioner.”
