In response to Boris Johnson’s announcement that he will resign as Prime Minister, Pat Venditti, Greenpeace UK Interim Executive Director, said: “The longstanding leadership crisis on climate and nature has to change. Johnson has a final chance to remedy this in his remaining time in office but green policies could also be the saving grace for any future leader. They’re hugely popular with voters and will neatly tackle the urgent, multiple crises we’re facing.
“Common sense solutions like cheap, clean, homegrown renewables, a roll-out of home insulation and heat pumps and a higher and loophole free tax on excess oil and gas profits would combat the cost of living crisis, the climate crisis and free us from paying Putin for gas.
“Future leadership hopefuls could also breathe life back into rural and coastal communities through boosting ecological, nature and climate-friendly food production and banning industrial fishing from Marine Protected Areas. And they could protect the most vulnerable communities here and abroad from the scourge of pollution through ridding us of single-use plastic and delivering on climate finance promises.
“The UK can’t afford to go backwards on climate and nature action. The next PM must understand that ditching cheap, quick and clean solutions and shirking the UK’s wider environmental obligations would deepen our crises, embarrass Britain on the world stage and haemorrhage votes at the next general election.”
