Met needs a radical change in culture, recruitment and structure
Responding to the Mayor’s Police and Crime Plan, Nick Bowes, Chief Executive at Centre for London said:
“With the city’s police mired in scandals and repugnant behaviours and with levels of serious youth violence still stubbornly high, it no surprise Londoners are fast losing confidence in the Met. This loss of trust has hit some communities more than others, from London’s Black, Asian and minority communities, to LGBTQ+ Londoners, through to women and girls left shocked by the tragic murder of Sarah Everard.
“The Mayor’s strategy rightly identifies that reversing this fall in confidence is a top priority. This is a huge task ahead for whoever is the new Commissioner but for the city to have the successful police force it deserves, a change in leadership at the top won’t be enough. Instead, a fundamental and radical change in culture, recruitment practices and structure will be required if the police are to tackle the complexities of keeping a global city safe”.
