What is happening to children in Ukraine?
Armed conflict in Ukraine has intensified, posing an imminent threat to 7.5 million children. In recent days, heavy weapons fire along the contact line in eastern Ukraine has already damaged water infrastructure and schools. Unless fighting subsides, tens of thousands of families could be forcibly displaced, dramatically escalating humanitarian needs – we are already seeing vast swathes of families, including children, attempting to leave the country via neighbouring countries including Poland and Romania.
How can the UK public support?
UNICEF has been working around the clock to keep children safe since this conflict began eight years ago – as things escalate now, we are committed to staying and delivering for children. We are helping to make sure that child health and protection services are sustained and families have clean water and nutritious food. What is UNICEF doing to help children and families – what will the money help fund?
UNICEF intend to stay and deliver in Ukraine and are focused on the delivery of critical supplies to children and their families. Key items include: Blankets, warm clothes for children, hygiene kits and items, health kits for primary health care, recreation kits and learning kits.
UNICEF is scaling up its response to provide access to basic services including water and sanitation, immunization and health care, schooling and learning, psychosocial support, and emergency cash assistance. We are trucking safe water to conflict-affected areas and prepositioning health, hygiene and emergency education supplies as close as possible to families near the contact line.
UNICEF is also supporting mobile child protection teams providing psychosocial care to children traumatized by chronic insecurity, responding to cases of violence and abuse against children and assisting children separated from family.
