IET: Failure of past industrial strategies a result of complacency

Chris Richards, Manufacturing Policy Advisor at the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) said: “Any industrial strategy which has a focus on certain technologies and sectors needs to be kept under constant review to ensure possible growth areas, particularly within emerging technologies, are not overlooked in the future.

“The failure of past industrial strategies was a result of complacency and not keeping pace with innovation in process, products and services. This is something which needs to be monitored in all sectors to identify future potential growth areas, not just the technologies and sectors identified today.

“The Government appears to be avoiding this mistake and has set up a detailed Foresight study looking at the Future of UK Manufacturing, which will report in the next 18 months.”
