IET: Formula 1 chief recognised by engineering body
The achievements of Red Bull Racing’s Chief Technical Officer, Adrian Newey have been honoured by Europe’s largest engineers’ body.
Mr Newey was awarded the Coales Medal for Achievement in Transport by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).
The award was made in recognition of his achievements in the motor racing world, which include being the only person in history to have designed Formula One World Championship winning cars for three different teams.
Adrian Newey said: "This is a huge honour for me to have been presented with the Coales Medal for Achievement in Transport. It is also a milestone for the motor racing industry that I have been recognised by the general transport industry for my part in transport development."
Dr Mike Short, IET President, said: “Adrian is a worthy recipient of the Coales Medal for Achievement in Transport.
“He is a leading light of the Formula 1 world and is widely regarded as one of the greatest engineers in the sport's history. His design-inspired cars continue to be the dominant force in the world of motor racing.”
As Chief Technical Officer of the Red Bull Racing Formula 1 team, Mr Newey has designed their championship-winning Red Bull RB6 and RB7.
He has worked in both Formula 1 and IndyCar racing as a race engineer, aerodynamicist, designer and technical director and enjoyed success in both categories. Newey-inspired designs have won numerous titles and over 80 Grand Prix, dominating much of the 1990s and late-2000s.
Mr Newey moved to Red Bull Racing in 2006, winning the Formula 1 drivers and the Constructors’ Championship in 2010 and 2011. The car he designed propelled Sebastian Vettel to retain his second Driver’s Championship, making him the youngest person in history to do so.
