IET: Top event to bring safety exports together

A leading engineering body, the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), is holding a seminar that includes discussion on safety at power stations and other key parts of national infrastructure.

The event takes place on Monday 21st March, at the Commonwealth Club as the world watches recovery efforts in Japan, including management of the severely damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant.

The IET’s safety event is set to bring together safety engineers, business, government and legal experts who will be discussing topics including UK approaches to safe management of existing and new nuclear facilities, as well as the particular safety challenges of older nuclear facilities – including their decommissioning. A senior Health and Safety Executive inspector of nuclear facilities, Steve Frost, will address the seminar on the safety regulatory environment for the UK’s Nuclear Facilities.

Dr. Tony Whitehead, the IET’s Policy Director said: “Safety is always important. This event will cover a wide range of hugely important safety issues including nuclear. At a time when UK and the wider world are asking serious and important questions about infrastructure safety this event presents an extremely timely forum for industry experts and regulators to meet and address those questions.”

At this year’s event speakers, sponsors and delegates from across the safety community will talk about key industry concerns to manifest as best-practice management. Engineers will hear how to manage safety processes efficiently, determine how to assess risk with ageing assets, establish how to increase compliance and demonstrate evidence of their safety assessments to satisfy the legal challenges within a constrained safety assessment scenario.

Another speaker at the event will be Peter Symons from Atkins Defence who said: “Safety assessment is an area which is constantly producing new and innovative ways of tackling safety problems new and old. I am pleased to be part of a community of safety practitioners looking to learn from one another and share ideas to better inform the way safety assessments are done (and reviewed!) across all industries.”

The IET’s Safety Assessments seminar will include speakers from the Health and Safety Executive, Atkins, Herbert Smith and ARCADIS.
