IET: Rail safety lecture from senior engineer
Carrying over a billion passengers a year means safety is a top priority for London Underground (LU). It is just that topic that will be reviewed when a leading LU engineer gives a lecture about keeping the Tube’s passengers safe on Monday 7 February at Europe’s largest engineering body the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).
The lecture, open to the public, will be given by Rowan Joachim, a Lead Electrical and Mechanical Engineer on the Tube. She will talk about how LU ensures the availability of emergency lighting and smoke control ventilation fans. She will be looking at some of the challenges associated with these systems from an availability and maintenance perspective and examine the latest techniques used to overcome key challenges.
Rowan said: “Keeping the Tube’s 1 billion plus customers a year moving and moving safely is a huge challenge for engineers. I hope this lecture will give people fresh perspective on the safety systems that we take for granted or don’t even realise exist.”
Rowan Joachim is a Lead Electrical and Mechanical (E&M) Engineer for LU. Rowan is also a lead E&M operational advisor for LU and subject matter expert for E&M and operational power issues. Her work has a particular focus on emergency power supplies. Rowan is also leading on the re-writing and revising of all LU’s E&M standards.
