Breast Cancer Care: BMJ research on UK breast cancer mortality rates

Dr Emma Pennery, Clinical Director at Breast Cancer Care said:

“It is very encouraging to hear that reductions in UK breast cancer mortality rates are slightly greater than previously thought. We know that earlier detection, breast screening and better treatments have played a significant role in this improvement over the past two decades.

“However, this research exposes the urgent need for reliable data collection. Breast Cancer Care’s research has shown that data collection on those living with secondary (metastatic) breast cancer is extremely inconsistent and this must be rectified as fast as possible so that better care and treatment can be put in place to support this neglected patient group.

“It is important to remember that while mortality rates may be decreasing nearly 46,000 people are diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK every year and rely on the support of charities and the NHS.”
