Comment on statistics from Cancer Research UK which show that breast cancer mortality rates have significantly declined.
Olivia Marks-Woldman, Head of Policy and Campaigns at Breast Cancer Care, said:
“It is very reassuring to see evidence that breast cancer mortality rates are declining, but we must not forget the support needs of those living with the disease today.
“Improved treatments mean that the number of people living for many years with secondary (metastatic)1 breast cancer is growing.
“Our research has shown that these patients can feel extremely isolated and suffer appalling gaps in care. This is why we are committed to campaigning for the rights of, and providing practical support to, this group.”

1- A diagnosis of advanced or secondary breast cancer means that breast cancer cells have travelled to another part of the body, such as the liver, lungs or bones. Secondary breast cancer is not curable but thanks to advances in medical treatments the disease can be controlled for months and in some cases years.
