Breast Cancer Care comment on research published on BMJ.com

Comment on research published on BMJ.com which suggests that women undergoing breast reduction surgery are being screened for cancer without their informed consent.

Jane Hatfield, Director of Policy and Research at Breast Cancer Care, said:

“It is essential that the tissue screening process, and the conditions it may detect, is fully explained to patients and they have the opportunity to consent to the procedure.

“As this debate on BMJ.com shows this is an extremely complex area and raises many ethical questions.

“We would welcome any review that takes in to account the clinical and psychosocial implications of this issue. Whatever the outcome, we would expect the recommendations to be followed across the UK so that patients receive the same levels of care.”
