Breast Cancer Care comment on launch of new genetic testing from BreastHealth UK

Comment on BreastHealth UK’s launch of a new genetic assessment service to determine an individual’s risk of breast cancer.

Jackie Harris, Clinical Nurse Specialist in breast health at Breast Cancer Care, said:

“We already know that the BRACA and TP3 genes increase a person’s lifetime risk of developing breast cancer, and recent research has shown that there are a number of lesser genes which may also affect an individual’s risk.

“What we don’t know is exactly how or why these lesser genes cause breast cancer. This new test from BreastHealth UK, combined with comprehensive clinical trials, can only add to our understanding of this.

“However, services already exist within the NHS for assessing risk based on family history and anyone with concerns should see their GP, who can also give advice on lifestyle choices and breast cancer risk.”
